I have been wanting to set up a store to sell some of my personal work for a long time. I am excited to announce I finally had some time to set it up. The store is powered by Storeenvy. I will be printing all of the prints myself on fine art paper and canvas. View prints

VSCO CAM

Visual Supply Co finally announced it's release of their new iPhone app called VSCO Cam. There have been a lot of people waiting on this app including myself. Since the presets for Lightroom, Aperture and Adobe Camera Raw are a big hit, I was hoping for something on my iPhone that would give me similar results. I really think they nailed it.

There are people reporting issues with the app. That's expected if you ask me. What app doesn't have release bugs? The app has crashed several times when I have been editing. That will get worked out on their first update. At least that's what I expect from a company that is all about a quality product. That is why they pushed the release date of the app. They strive for quality!

	So what do you get?

When you open the app, it defaults to the camera screen with an overlay grid. I wish the grid was off by default instead of on. You have the option of turning off the grid in the options button. You can turn the flash on and off and reverse the camera. Once you take a few photos, you can view them in a grid or you can double tap a photo to view it in full screen and then swipe to scroll through them.

You get several icons along the bottom of your photo when one is selected in the small grid view or in full screen view. Those icons are:

Magnifying glass - This returns to the small grid view

Paintbrush - This is the edit button

Talk bubble - This is your share button for email, twitter, facebook and instagram

Frame with an arrow - This is to process the image and save it to your phones library. You can select multiple photos to process at one time

Trash can - This deletes a photo

When you choose the photo you want, select it and hit your little paintbrush. It will take you to a new screen with 3 black and white choices and 7 color options. Just tap on the numbers until you get a look that you want. You also get the option to reset the image or undo. If you are happy with the image, hit done. It will apply what you have done to the photo and take you back to the grid view of your photos. If you want to tweak the image further, just hit the little wrench to fine tune.

The wrench icon is their way of giving you a toolkit like in Lightroom. The options they give you are fade, grain, contrast, temperature, fill, exposure, vignette, saturation and highlights. This gives you more control over the look you are going for. That pretty much sums up the app. Simple and to the point.

I think they did an awesome job on the release of this app. The colors you get are awesome. There are a lot of apps out there, but this app gives me more of what I am looking for when processing images on my phone.

Here is a small list of things I want to see added to the app:

A crop tool with aspect ratios (They mentioned that they are going to be working on it)

 A straigten tool

A brush feature. This would make this app so much more bad ass

Maybe an option to publish to tumblr

 Save to Dropbox

This might be way to much to ask, but a folder system to organize photos. I can dream, right?

Here are a few samples from a quick walk in downtown Oklahoma City

I have been talking with Desmond for several months and today we finally got together at his studio for a quick shoot. He needed some new photos for his art show starting April 28th. It's called Generation Next and will be at the State Capital for 4 months. Try to go by if you can. We took a few shots of his work and man, there are some good paintings that will be there.

This is the first of several projects we have been talking about. I can't wait to share what we have been brainstorming about. Desmond is a super cool guy. He's creative and full of ideas. I love it! Here are a few from the shoot.

I went out to support my long time friend Jabee for his Leap of Faith art show auction. There were a lot of people that went out. I got to see some people I haven't seen in 10 years. One of best parts of the show for me was the live painting by artist Bunky Echo- Hawk. He was doing a painting of Jabee. The reference photo he happened to be using was a photo I took several years ago. I was pretty excited about that. Bunky is an awesome artist and to see something I photographed come to life in a painting was very cool.

I decided to go out and support local artist Josh Sallee for the release show for his new album Probable Flaws. The show was awesome and there were a ton of people. It was really cool to say hi to Privalegde and James Harden who showed up to support Josh.

I got to see a bunch of people I haven't seen in a while. It was fun hanging with GRPFLY Clothing who was also there selling his gear.

This was also a good chance for me to try out the new Canon 5D Mark III in low light and the new VSCO Film for Lightroom 4.

Over the weekend my wife and I got invited to the Fashion In Full Bloom event hosted by NBA player Serge Ibaka. Our good friend Vernon Deas from GRPFLY Clothing provided all the shirts for the models to wear while they were getting ready for the show. The event was put on to support The Allied Arts in Oklahoma City. We got to meet and chat a little bit with Project Runway's Johnathan Kayne, Serge Ibaka, and Kevin Durant. It was also good catching up with Carolyn and Gary Goldman from Uptown Kids.

We ended up having to leave the show pretty early because we had another event to go to, but while we were there we had a blast.

This is the second movie for my Seasons and Moods series.

It was more experimental than anything else. All of the footage, except for the grass in the beginning, was shot with a reversed Canon 50mm 1.4. I was blown away with the results. Yes most of it is out of focus and abstract, but that's why I like it. I haven't seen any other experiments using a reversed lens.

Make sure you have an AND or an OUT

Do you ever get in a rut or in that mode where you are just not motivated? We all get there and it’s tough to get out of it sometimes. Watching other photographers and viewing their work should inspire. For the most part it does, but when you are struggling with your own work it starts to make you upset. You start to question yourself as a photographer. I know I've done it. You just have to face it, it will always be like that. There will always be someone better at the craft you are trying to perfect.

I have decided to stop caring about all of that. I will strive to be the best I can at what I do and not try to be better than others in my field. It’s really pointless. It takes away from you being a creative person. Making money from taking pictures is pretty awesome, but that’s not what keeps me motivated. Snapping a few frames of someone and saving that moment forever keeps me motivated. Taking pictures is not the only thing that keeps me motivated. You have to have something more.

I recently read an article about “having an and”. I wish I had the link to reference it. This is something I have been doing for years and I didn’t even know what I was doing until I read that blog post. Basically it talked about having an "and" plus having what you do for a living. So for me, it would be photographer and artist or photographer and designer. You could be a musician and programmer, painter and cyclist. It could be anything. I’m not saying don’t spend more time on your passion, I’m saying have another source for creativity to keep you fresh and motivated.

Over the years I have been a graphic designer, web designer, video editor and artist, outside of photography. Before I got back into photography, I didn’t have anything outside of the field I was in. In return, I got burned out on what I was doing for a career. I could write it a million times. You need an "and" or an "out". Whatever you call it, you need it. If you don’t, you run the risk at getting burned out and not being 100% at what you are passionate about.

By having an “and” or "out" does several things. It keeps you fresh on the thing you are most passionate about. It opens doors for inspiration and creativity in other areas that you never thought you would get inspiration or creativity from. It also gives you another area that you can make money for you and/or your family. You never know when a client might want something more than you offer.

Right now I am a photographer and artist. This means I will do things outside of photography like doing video projects and making art. Sure it’s all art, but not the same art. Spending several days on a video project then returning to taking still photographs is refreshing for me. I will even continue to work on some web and design stuff. I can write about this forever because I believe it’s very important but I won’t. I will end with challenging you to spend 30 minutes to an hour a day on something other than your money maker. You will be surprised at what it can do for you.

Iphone and Computer editing for Instagram

I have been noticing several people talking (myself included) about wheather or not editing photos on your computer for Instagram is cheating. Personally, I think it is. I recently stopped following a few people because they were posting their studio shots with awesome lighting, etc. It wasn't because they were bad photographers, but I want to look at my Instagram feed full of images that were taken and edited on the phone. Isn't that the point of the app?

I think as long as you do everything on the phone then there is no cheating. There are so many awesome apps that give me so much control over my image. Here are a few that I have been using lately.

 Image Blender

 Photo fx by Tiffen

 Decim8

I have probably 20 photo apps on my phone, but I have a few that are my favorite. All of the images I post are edited in one of the three listed, the filters in the app or no filter at all. You should check these people out on Instagram @popesaintvictor, @meagancignoli, @micahbickham, @fosteraddington , @jeremycowart

These 15 images were all edited on an iPhone 4s. No photoshop. It's pretty amazing were we're at in technology, that we can do stuff like this on a phone. You can see more of my Instagram images at @travisclancy or view my images online.
